This workshop will focus on the historical evolution of boards in nonprofit organizations, some of the key elements that are critical for future success, and strategies to assist boards in moving in this direction. Traditionally, boards have focused on the stewardship of tangible assets and a relationship with management to plan and execute the strategic objectives of the organization. But the demands and challenges of these times require that organizations be flexible and nimble in responding to changing conditions and opportunities.

The Consuelo Foundation will share experiences from launching a new direct service program in Honolulu called the ABC (Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up) Pilot Program. Presenters will share issues and challenges to the program development such as cultural issues in importing an “outside” program into a closely-knit community; the importance of communication with other community-based agencies and with public agencies; the successful engagement of families and agencies into a new program; and addressing unexpected problems in a new program.

Co-authors of a recent study on youth-serving organizations will share insights on the drivers of growth for youth-serving organizations. In the youth-serving sector in particular, maintaining annual levels of service, staffing, and funding is an uphill battle that often takes heroic effort on the part of nonprofit leaders and boards. The workshop will zero in on key pillars of growth identified in the study, and will take attendees through an exercise to help them understand their organizational growth rate relative to other organizations of similar size

“Breaking Down the Walls” to Achieve Greater Collaboration and Capacity (RD)

Using an innovative new program designed to foster and deepen relationships inside and outside an organization, one organization was able to “break down the walls” between departments in order to collaborate on a process to more fully engage ambassadors, staff, and supporters. The program involves institution-wide efforts and opportunities for input, data collection and analysis, outcomes and benchmarking tools, and dissemination of the information collected in a variety of ways (written, spoken, and electronic), with a feedback loop to inform on how to improve the process.

Innovations in Performance-Based Contracting and Quality Assurance Systems (IP)

Findings from a study that tested innovative performance based contracts and quality assurance systems in public/private child welfare partnerships will be presented. The five-year study by the National Quality Improvement Center on the Privatization of Child Welfare Services includes final outcomes of a cross-site evaluation testing a continuous quality improvement approach to the use of performance based contracts, and practice data to promote organizational, practice, and client outcomes.
