Thursday, Oct. 21, 3:15 p.m.-4:45 p.m.
Session:
D2
Track:
Governance
Presentation Materials:

This workshop will feature detailed information about multi-institutional arrangements, drilling down from structure to operations. Various operational issues that can make or break multi-institutional arrangements will be examined. This session is a follow-up to a workshop presented at the 2009 Alliance National Conference, which featured a general overview of multi-institutional models, issues, and procedures, with a conceptual focus on structure. The presenters are from HB Solutions, a member of the Alliance’s Executive Consultant Select Group with expertise in mergers and acquisitions.

Workshop objectives/takeaways:

  • examine different levels of board involvement in strategy and monitoring;

  • review topics related to mergers, including:

  • CEO management styles;

  • nebulous roles and responsibilities for the integrated senior leadership team;

  • business systems such as IT, phone, financial reporting, etc.;

  • donor relationship philosophies and approaches;

  • staff development approaches;

  • branding approaches; and

  • highly prescriptive and highly collaborative client service models.

Presenters: Eric Stonehill, managing director of health and human services, and Virginia Tyler, consultant, HB Solutions

Workshop synopsis:

The stage for these subjects will be set with a brief overview of the structural context in which they play out, and they will be illustrated with an examination of several blinded case studies of mergers that failed to gain immediate momentum because of one or more of the above issues. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss how these problems may have been avoided, and will leave the workshop with a list of questions to consider for any multi-party collaboration, affiliation, or merger. The intended audience for the program includes executive directors, board members and senior leaders.
