Thursday, Oct. 21, 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Session:
B2
Track:
Leadership
Presentation Materials:

This workshop will focus on the historical evolution of boards in nonprofit organizations, some of the key elements that are critical for future success, and strategies to assist boards in moving in this direction. Traditionally, boards have focused on the stewardship of tangible assets and a relationship with management to plan and execute the strategic objectives of the organization. But the demands and challenges of these times require that organizations be flexible and nimble in responding to changing conditions and opportunities. Boards must now anticipate an environment of continual change, which requires a forward-looking, entrepreneurial orientation.

Workshop objectives/takeaways:

  • assess governance strengths and weaknesses to support organizational capacity to thrive in the current and future environment;

  • explore ways to strengthen the board chair/CEO relationship to promote and sustain a board culture that supports a high performing organization; and

  • name eight key qualities that are critical to achieving and maintaining a high performing board.

Presenter: Reed Henderson, consultant, Henderson Consulting, retired CEO of Family Lifeline
